Michael Zajakowski

The Changing Face of Photojournalism

Michael Zajakowski has been a photojournalist, director of photography and photo editor for 26 years. He began his career in photojournalism at The Daily Calumet in Chicago after studying with Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist John H. White. Subsequently, as a staff photographer for The Times of Northwest Indiana, he was The Times’ first foreign correspondent, reporting from Poland as the country emerged from Communism in 1989. Two years later Michael assumed the position of director of photography for The Times. As an early advocate of digital photojournalism, Michael converted The Times to an all-digital photo department, and was invited to present at South Africa’s first photojournalism conference. Michael joined the Chicago Tribune as a picture editor in 1998, and since has held several picture-editing and design roles. In 2000, Michael was a contributing editor and photographer for CITY2000, a project to document the city of Chicago. He currently is the picture editor for the Chicago Tribune Magazine and other feature sections, and designs feature pages. Michael also teaches a visual communication class in the graduate journalism program at DePaul University in Chicago.

In addition to the topic, “The Changing Face of Photojournalism,” Michael will discuss what makes a photo desirable for publishing and the ethics of photojournalism.
